Faces of Barrow County: Amy Hunter Rhodes, Girl Scout Leader and Magazine Business Owner

My husband and I reside in Bethlehem.

We have one daughter age 8 and two sons ages 8 and 9.

The kids love playing team sports at the Barrow Recreation Center.

Our daughter plays softball and basketball, and our sons play baseball, basketball and soccer.

My husband coaches the boys and I co-lead my daughter in Brownie Girl Scouts.

They love their Barrow County school.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

Started working while in high school at a local department store in Snellville.

After graduating college, I joined the nation’s largest distributor of vending and concession product.

After being there several years I was promoted to an Account Executive responsible for a sales territory of N.E. Georgia, N.W. South Carolina and E. Tennessee.

After my daughter was born, I joined my father in his business in Barrow County called the MTM Shopper Town Values Magazine.

Today my father is semi-retired and passed the business to me.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

Try to always see the best in every difficult situation.

Learn from your struggles and have a positive outlook on your life.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

All the kids will be in high school, so this should be an interesting time for both my husband and I.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

I played the trombone in the high school marching band.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

Go back to Great Britain with my husband and kids one day.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

Hands down would be the people in our community. We absolutely love living life with our family in Bethlehem.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

Positive people that show encouragement to others.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

Would love to sit down with a comedian.

I love to laugh.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?

We have so many, I could never choose just one.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

I have lived in Barrow County since 2009 and started working in the county in 2014.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

There are so many interesting people I have met through the Barrow Chamber of Commerce.

I have built many great relationships.

Going through Leadership Barrow and then facilitating a couple years later I met many amazing Community Leaders.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

The Corner Bookstore is like going back in time with the older building itself along with the many books there that bring back much of our past.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

It still has the small-town charm and is not far from one of the largest metro areas in the country.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

Love, faith and family.
