Meet Tery Overbey, Building Materials Buyer at Hill’s Ace Hardware and Lumber Center and President of the Winder Barrow Community Theatre.
We’d like to thank Tery very much for sitting down with us to discuss his experience living and working in Barrow County.
Enjoy our interview with Tery
Are you married and do you have children?
I am married. Will be 39 years this September. I have one daughter and one granddaughter.
What is your connection to Barrow County?
Well, I married into it. When my wife and I got married, this is where her parents were, so we decided to move up here and have been here ever since.
We got married in September and moved up here in October, right afterwards and been here ever since. Thirty nine years.
And what inspired you or lead you to the theatre and working with Winder Barrow County Theatre?
Well, that’s kind of funny. A couple of friends at church were already involved in the Community Theatre and they invited me out to audition for a show.
I’d never done this type of stuff before my entire life. And this was maybe 15 years ago, so I was already well into my forties. So anyway, I decided okay I’ll give it a shot.
They were doing Barefoot in the Park and I came out and auditioned and I got a part. Luckily it was a small part enough to get my feet wet. But it also was enough to give me the bug and I’ve been here ever since. I was a telephone repair guy in Barefoot in the Park, if you’re familiar with the show.
It was a great part, a funny show and I loved it.
What’s something interesting that most people wouldn’t know about you?
I’m pretty much an open book. I think I’ve shared just about everything that’s ever happened to me with people so I don’t think anyone would be surprised by anything I shared.
If you were cast in a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would it be? Living or dead.
Elvis Presley. He’d be 84 years old now. I’m a big fan.
I would have loved to have been in one of his movies.
Do you have the dance moves?
No, I would not have done that. I’d love to sing with him
If you could have lunch with anyone alive or dead who would it be and why?
Well we’ve already talked about Elvis. I have a musical background. So, let’s go with Bing Crosby.
In my eyes Elvis and Bing Crosby were on the same level as far as talent goes. I’d love to talk to him about his movies with Bob Hope. That would be fun.
Where in Barrow County would you take him for lunch?
I’d take him to Smokin PO Boys.
What’s your favorite thing to eat there?
The wings. Butter dry rub wings.
What is your favorite thing or something unique about Barrow County?
To me, it still feels like a small town. People know almost everybody. We see people we know just about everywhere we go. I just like that feeling it has.
Who is the most interesting person you’ve met in Barrow County?
Buddy Outz. He passed away recently.
We were in the Lions Club together and we went to church together at first United Methodist Church. He was mayor and he’s the one that actually created or built this community theatre.
It was during his tenure as mayor that he renovated this building and made it what you see right now. Yeah, it was an old manufacturing plant, not in real good shape.
He felt like Winder needed some culture, so he talked to Donald Smith who’s also a member of the theatre. He redid this building, refurbished it, and hired Don as a Cultural Arts Director and gave us this home right here and we really appreciate it.
He was an interesting guy. He was International President with the Lions Club, and just did a bit of everything.
We hope you enjoyed learning about Tery and his story working with the Winder Barrow Community Theatre.
